The City of Surrey appointed Wales McLelland to complete the renovations to what had been the Kensington Prairie Elementary school; it now functions as a daycare facility and community centre. Our work consisted of interior and exterior renovations to three building including seismic upgrades. New windows were installed to bring the building envelope up to modern standards; electrical and mechanical upgrades were completed; and new floors and millwork were installed. One of the buildings is a designated heritage building and required special treatment to maintain the original condition of the exterior. Lead paint had to be removed, we replaced the cedar siding and shingles, and re-pointed the stonework. Additionally, the windows of this building were replaced with replicas of the original double-hung wood windows.
